pleased to announce that we’re about to tender contract to Kirsten Schuder, who lives in Virginia, and who is a very good writer. I like her personally a great deal, and her book looks like it could be a big hit, to say the least. It’s called Inside Dweller, and it looks pretty good (Duh. I wouldn’t sign her if it didn’t.) But RP is mona send her a contract, so keep crossed the fangers. I’m struggling, meantime, with my latest, called the Cape. I really need, I think, to go to the Republic of South Africa, where it’s set, and get a feel for the place–to see the Harbor, Shipwreck Beach, the Cape of Good Hope, then go over to Durban and see the airport, to Pretoria, the diamond mines in Johannesburg, etc. I have always wanted to see this country–ever since I met a girl named Retha, an AFS stoont who came from the Republic and who returned, breaking my heart. To be sure I recovered–it helps that I have the best, most encouraging wife in Christendom–But Retha’s beautiful country has me really wanting to visit: to surf, to relax on the seashore in Durban: ’tis a consummation devoutly to be wished. See you tomorrow!
